About
Like so many I started photography in a simple way happy to watch and imitate. Then as my confidence grew I over complicated to prove my ability, and weighed myself down with technique and equipment. The passing years have brought with them a return to simplicity and the awareness of a point of view. One cannot live over fifty years without developing feelings (conscious or otherwise) about one’s fellow men and the planet we live on.
This point of view is evident in every image created throughout the history of the medium (in fact in all forms of visual expression from caves of Lascaux on), because an image involves a frame, and a frame is what a photographer has chosen to capture and share, above all else that he has chosen to exclude.
Some of the images (frames) on this site I might attempt to explain with words, whilst others are more evasive. However just as urgent was my need to capture them; perhaps even more so as I felt there was some mystery in them I couldn't easily describe and therefore understand. My aim has always been towards 'straight' photography, a term that also evades easy definition, but in short the presentation of an image in which the subject itself is more apparent than the artifice used to present it.
I hope that you enjoy looking through these images and that one day you will have a chance to join me on a workshop where we might have time, amongst many other things, to talk some more.

There is a strong bias in the locations represented towards Italy and Southern Africa; my father is Italian, and I studied in Bologna and Rome. I also have family ties to South Africa.
